When You Feel Like Hiding Under the Rug: Managing Back-to-School Anxiety
As August rolls around, there's a familiar feeling that begins to settle in for many families.
New schedules. New teachers. New classrooms. New expectations.
For some, it's exciting.
For others, it feels a little more like wanting to hide under the rug.
That was exactly what our cat decided to do one day—completely tucked away beneath a rug, peeking out with wide eyes as if the world outside felt just a little too overwhelming. It made me laugh, but it also reminded me of something important.
Sometimes, we all feel like hiding.
Whether you're a student starting a new school, a teacher preparing for another year, or a parent carrying the responsibility of getting everyone ready, back-to-school season can bring anxiety for people of all ages.
The good news? Feeling nervous doesn't mean you're not ready. It simply means you're stepping into something new.
Why Does Back-to-School Season Feel So Stressful?
Our brains naturally like predictability. When routines change or we're faced with uncertainty, our nervous system can respond with worry.
Questions begin to creep in:
"Will I like my teacher?"
"Will I make friends?"
"Can I handle this workload?"
"Will this year be harder than last year?"
"Am I prepared?"
These thoughts are completely normal. Anxiety often shows up before something important—not because something bad will happen, but because our brain is trying to prepare us for the unknown.
Four Ways to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety
1. Start Your Routine Early
A sudden shift from summer freedom to school schedules can be overwhelming. Begin adjusting bedtime, wake-up times, and daily routines several days before school starts. Familiar routines help your brain feel more secure.
2. Talk About Your Feelings
Children, teens, and even adults benefit from talking through their worries.
Parents can ask open-ended questions like:
"What are you most looking forward to?"
"What are you most nervous about?"
"Is there anything I can help you prepare for?"
Simply being heard often reduces anxiety.
3. Focus on What You Can Control
When anxiety grows, our minds often focus on "what if."
Instead, shift your attention to what you can do today.
Lay out tomorrow's clothes.
Pack your backpack.
Organize school supplies.
Review your schedule.
Each small action sends your brain a powerful message:
"I'm prepared."
4. Remember That Courage Includes Feeling Nervous
One of the greatest lessons we can teach children—and ourselves—is that bravery isn't the absence of fear.
Bravery is moving forward even when you feel nervous.
It's okay to have butterflies.
It's okay to wonder how the year will go.
You don't have to eliminate anxiety before you can succeed.
Parents, Give Yourself Grace Too
Back-to-school isn't just an adjustment for kids.
Parents are managing schedules, transportation, homework, activities, and the emotional needs of their children—all while balancing work and home responsibilities.
Teachers are preparing classrooms, lesson plans, and welcoming new students.
Everyone deserves grace during this season.
You Don't Have to Navigate Anxiety Alone
Sometimes back-to-school worries settle after the first week.
Sometimes they don't.
If anxiety begins interfering with sleep, school attendance, friendships, confidence, or everyday life, it may be time to seek additional support.
At Mind Well Counseling, we help children, teens, and adults develop healthy coping skills for anxiety, school stress, ADHD, life transitions, and emotional well-being.
We're also excited to share that our practice has grown! We now have a therapist who specializes in working with children, providing families with even more support as they navigate the school year together.
Whether you're a parent concerned about your child, a student struggling with anxiety, or a teacher feeling overwhelmed by the start of another school year, you don't have to face it alone.
A Final Thought
The next time you feel like hiding under the rug, remember this:
It's okay to feel afraid.
It's okay to feel uncertain.
But you don't have to stay hidden.
Sometimes, all it takes is one small step out from under the rug to discover you're stronger than your fears.
If you or your child could benefit from extra support this school year, we'd love to help.
At Mind Well Counseling, we're committed to helping children, teens, and adults build confidence, manage anxiety, and thrive through life's transitions.
